During the pandemic in 2020-21 when all live music venues were shut down, the musicians of the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) created digital content that allowed us to share music and connect with our audience the only way we could, through online platforms.

As part of my ongoing commitment to recognizing the wonderful classical music written by under-represented composers, I created curated lists of chamber music by Black, Latinx and Women composers.

Davies Symphony Hall, Jan 2021

With my SFS colleagues I performed 2 pieces by African American women who appear on both of these lists, born a century apart, “Five Folksongs in Counterpoint” by Florence Price (1887-1953) and “Strum” by Jessie Montgomery (b. 1984).

From San Francisco Symphony Currents Series, “Rhythm Spirits” features master tabla player Zakir Hussain in a video about his extraordinary life and international career. I perform in the chamber piece “Bichhua” and demonstrate some North Indian Hindustani cello techniques.

From San Francisco Symphony SoundBox Series, a lovely piece for string ensemble by Caroline Shaw, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting.

To bring some humor and joy to the public during the difficult pandemic years, the musicians of the SFS created a hilarious video of Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” featuring our families, pets, and leisure activities. Enjoy!
